About the Icon
Hesus Manghigput
(Jesus the Celebrator)
A fitting artwork for the Year for Priests (June 19, 2009 - June 19, 2010), "Hesus Manghigput" is a creative attempt to inculturate the Christian faith in the sublime mystery of the priesthood.
Gleaned from the alibata script, an archaic vernacular of Cebuano origin, "manghigput" stands for "celebrator, celebrant" in reference to priests in the animistic tradition of Central and Southern Philippines. The austere hair and the piercing look of the Eucharistic Jesus remind us of the radical demands of the Christian faith.
This icon is the work of an Augustinian Recollect Brother Jaazeal Jakosalem, OAR and Agustin Jakosalem. Made especially for the Year for Priest, Bro Jaazeal gave the full copyright of this artwork to the CBCP Communications Development Foundation, Inc.
